Is this ethical?
Looking at human history, almost every action, with few exceptions, has been examined within its own moral framework. Humans have always faced the dilemma of whether to act or not, consulting authority mechanisms such as religion, dogmas, and societal and cultural norms to evaluate their behavior. Religion has historically been used as a tool to control societies; social norms have guided individuals to accept the ethics dictated by authority. Today, although these authoritarian influences have largely diminished, ethics are still mostly shaped by the moral norms accepted by society. In other words, what is considered right or wrong is determined more by social consensus than by individual choice.
Looking at today’s technological environment, the scope of ethical questions has increased exponentially. We are in a period where artificial intelligence is integrated into our lives, Web 3, Industry 4.0, and revolutions in biotechnology are ongoing. At the threshold of this technological singularity, humanity has the capacity to transform both itself and its environment. So, are ethical questions still relevant? Absolutely. Because whether we reach posthuman levels or transcend the limits of our biology, our emotions, thoughts, and moral mechanisms will continue to evolve. Ethics is not a static concept; it evolves, taking different forms across societies and generations.
One of the most concrete examples of this is the historical evolution of the concept of childhood. Centuries ago, in many parts of the world, children were not yet recognized as children; they were married at an early age, made to work in heavy labor, and even forced to fight. At that time, these practices did not constitute a moral problem for most societies. Viewed from the present, these behaviors may seem inhumane and unacceptable, but for those societies, they were normative realities. Similarly, practices such as euthanasia or abortion have varied moral evaluations across cultures and times. In some societies, these practices are accepted, while in others, they are considered the greatest immorality. These examples demonstrate that ethical understanding is variable and historically contingent.
The moral understanding of humanity at the threshold of technological singularity will inevitably change. We will spread beyond Earth; the solar system, and perhaps other star systems, will be colonized. In the near future, our only home will not be Earth alone. Our business models will change, our communication methods and social behaviors will evolve, and our ethical norms will reshape alongside this process. Practices that were once considered abnormal or morally unacceptable may now be regarded as normal. This clearly demonstrates the shift in societal ethical and moral structures.
We have managed to fit our regulations on Earth within the framework of our ethical concepts, given our limited space and resources. But can we do the same on a cosmic scale? When humanity seeks to meet its energy needs and become an intergalactic presence, concepts like the Kardashev scale come into play. If we spread across the galaxy, we can utilize the energy potential of star systems; Dyson Spheres are the most concrete example of this.
A Dyson Sphere involves completely taking over a star system and covering the star with massive energy-collecting panels. This can eliminate potential life within the system. Advanced or undeveloped organisms may evolve into intelligent and morally capable species over hundreds of millions of years. Life does not have to be carbon-based; silicon- or ammonia-based forms are theoretically possible. In this context, intervening in a star system does not only provide energy but also affects the course of evolution and the possibilities of cosmic life.
Stars without planets can theoretically be selected; however, their occurrence is very low. In terms of material supply and construction engineering, Dyson Spheres are extremely complex and risky. This also raises ethical and technical issues, such as bringing materials from other star systems or dismantling planets within our own system. Even simply settling on other planets is ethically problematic. Planets suitable for life may already host existing or potential life; colonization could destroy this life or disrupt ecosystems.
Today, one of the primary priorities in scientific research is ensuring that the areas being studied are not harmed. Antarctic expeditions or space missions prioritize avoiding environmental damage. Agreements such as the Outer Space Treaty and the Antarctic Treaty make it mandatory to protect natural environments. This principle also serves as a precedent in addressing ethical issues such as Dyson Spheres or space colonization. Humanity, when acting in the universe, should not only consider its own interests but also bear responsibility toward other life forms and ecosystems.
So, will we refrain from constructing Dyson Spheres or colonizing new planets due to ethical concerns?
Of course not.
Throughout history, humans have interpreted ethical concepts according to their own interests and societal needs, manipulated them when necessary, and continued to develop and act in the world. There is no universal moral order; ethics is shaped solely from a human perspective, and humanity uses it to serve its own purposes as it gains power.
In conclusion, humanity has now reached a point where it is an effective actor not only on Earth but across different corners of the universe. This brings not only power but also responsibility. Humanity’s interests should always be prioritized to sustain existence, develop, and meet its needs. Goals such as acquiring energy, colonizing new worlds, or using resources are natural components of this priority. However, this does not mean completely disregarding ethical rules; the idea of destroying the universe as we wish or establishing a “dictatorship” in the name of humanity is unacceptable.
Humanity’s actions on a cosmic scale should be planned in a way that prioritizes its own interests while not entirely eliminating fundamental life potentials. For example, colonizing a planet could threaten potential life there; constructing a Dyson Sphere could affect the natural processes within a star system. The critical point is that humanity should maximize its interests while avoiding irreversible ecosystem destruction and interventions that would completely eradicate life.
The future depends not only on our technological capacity but also on our ability to use this capacity responsibly. Humanity will act to secure its own existence while consciously ensuring that potential life forms and ecosystems are not entirely destroyed. The goal is to maximize human interests without turning the universe into a zone of arbitrary destruction.
This perspective redefines the boundaries of our ethical understanding: humanity must act to secure its own future, but this action should be planned not just with short-term interests but also long-term cosmic risks in mind. Our power in the universe is not only the limit of what we can do but also the measure of our responsibilities. Humanity must maintain a balance that protects its own interests while not completely disrupting the fundamental structure of the universe.
In short, humanity’s cosmic journey requires a constant balance between interest and ethics. Priority will always be humanity, but this priority does not justify completely ignoring other possibilities in the universe. Humanity must continue to exist and develop as a strong civilization; however, while doing so, it must act with a measured and conscious cosmic ethic rather than an unrestricted dominance mindset.
